North Alabama Daylily Society News and Notes

3-14-2010

The March meeting of the North Alabama Daylily Society will be held in the Boeing Education Classroom (adjacent to the gift shop) of the Huntsville Botanical Garden on Sunday, March 28 at 2:00 P.M.  We are particularly honored to have Dan Trimmer from Watermill Gardens in Enterprise, Florida as our guest speaker. Dan is one of this nation’s most highly respected hybridizers of our favorite flower, having introduced and registered well over 240 excellent cultivars since the early 1990’s.  He is also in extremely high demand as a speaker as he always provides an educational and entertaining program.

As most of you know, Dan and Jane Trimmer have graciously accepted our invitation to be the banquet speakers for our 2011 AHS Regional Meeting here in Huntsville on June 17-18 2011.  To say the least, we are proud and excited to have them join us for that important meeting.

Dan has informed us of his intent to ship a large number of impressive auction cultivars to us this week.  As soon as we get the names of those cultivars, we will communicate those to you.  We hope the bidding for those cultivars will be aggressive as it is his intent to share a goodly portion of the proceeds with our club.

Since Dan cannot get a good airline connection back to Orlando until Monday A.M. we plan to have an early evening dinner with Dan at Landry’s Seafood House which is located near the Botanical Garden.  If you would like to join us to continue what will be a most enjoyable evening and dinner conversation contact Dave Flanigan at 256-233-4354 or daflan@charter.net

We hope to see all of you for what will be a spectacular Sunday !!!

WOW!  Where did February go?  I know it’s the shortest month of the year but it was gone before we knew it but that also means that we’re that much closer to spring!

We had a very informative meeting with Fred Spicer from the Botanical Gardens.  He enlightened us on facts regarding the Gardens that should make us proud and thankful that we have such a beautiful place to hold our meetings.

We also want to welcome our new members that joined last month. Our new members are Ron Waddell, Nancy Nash and Pat and Bill McCarthy. Please be sure to introduce yourself  to these new folks and wear your name tag if you have one.

Speaking of name tags, let me or Cathy Braswell know if you need one and we’ll place a club order.

Our April speaker will be Arnold Rutkis, who is a sculptor and landscape artist.  His presentation will be “Awaken The Land - A Lecture on Eco-Scapes in Birmingham, AL”.  He has a website at www.stoneshovel.com <http://www.stoneshovel.com> if you would like to see what he’s been doing in our area.

Don’t forget to register for the Region 14 Spring Meeting to be held in Gulfport, MS.  Larry Grace will be the speaker and I can’t wait to see what he’s working on.

See you on April 11th.
